History of Ritchie House
Ritchie House was built in 1928 by Lloyd and Laura (Ransbury) Ritchie.
The Ritchie family was from South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island. The Ransbury family was one of the original
famillies that settled in Tobermory in the late 1800's.
Lloyd and Laura married in 1927 and had a daughter Margaret in 1928. Margaret married Robert "Jiggs"
MacArthur in 1946 and their family settled in the Tobermory area as well.
Lloyd and Laura operated Ritchie's Restaurant which is the present day location of the Diver's Den. Lloyd
also operated a cabin cruiser called the Neewash II and offered week long fishing trips for tourists. After they sold their
restaurant and boat, Lloyd and Laura bought the Lighthouse Garage and Takeout, the present day location of the Lighthouse
Restaurant, which the house overlooks.
Lloyd and Laura sold the garage in 1972, for a much deserved retirement.
